The Step Aside Concept
Excuse me while I get a little deep. I’d love to share some experiences in songwriting with you…
I have a brain that loves to calculate. The problem is, it doesn’t know when to stop. I’m sure most of you are nodding your head in agreement – it’s part of our wonderful existence that we will evolve past when we’re ready – but that’s a whole other post.
Anyway, up until I was 22 I never thought I was a songwriter. The songs I did pull out of my ass I thought had to do with sheer force and luck – but one night, just as I started to put my head back on my pillow, a thunderous, melodic bass line fell out of nowhere. It pounded through my brain like pulsating molasses. The only room left in my head was filled with a thought stopping awe. “Where the hell did that come from?!”, were the only words that could escape out of the beautiful shock.
So where does the music come from? Rithma, my music partner, and I have a simple saying for when we’re thinking too much as we’re writing. “Step Aside”, we say and smile. There’s a wonderful relief that follows a sigh as our minds quiet and we listen…
